Learn how to buy both new and used dirt bikes to make your shopping experience easier

Dirt bikes, unlike ATVs which have at least 3 tires, have only two wheels. If you want to purchase a used dirt bike, you will definitely be able to save some money if you:

know what to look for,

ask the previous owner the right questions in order to determine the condition of the bike, and

intend to do the work on your bike yourself.

Some questions to ask the seller when buying a dirt bike are how often they change the air filter and the transmission oil, where they store their bike, how many people previously owned it, and if they have made any modifications to it.

You want to shy away from those bikes that have been passed on from one owner to the next or stored outside. If the owner cannot recall the last change in air filter or transmission oil, there’s a chance they’re not too concerned about maintaining their bikes. Also, although modifications can add some benefits, heavy modifications can take a toll on the bike itself and wear it out. If too much has been replaced or altered, you should probably stay away from it.

Keep in mind that working on a two-stroke dirt bike is easier than a four-stroke. To check the tires, you can put the bike on a stand and try to move it from side to side. If you notice any movement, there are probably bearing problems which will cost more to replace. While the bike is on the stand, you can also rotate the tires to see if the rims are bent. Excluding engine and suspension repairs (which are usually more costly), dirt bike repairs can easily rise above $500.

This is precisely why it is important to know the condition of the bike before you buy it. In most cases, used dirt bikes do not have warranties and cannot be returned. Keeping this in mind (along with the fact that you’re paying some good money for it), if the seller does not want to let you ride it before you buy it, then do not even consider purchasing it.

Dirt bike parts can include parts that need replacement or accessories that you’d like simply to give a unique look to your vehicle. One thing to remember is to always make sure that the part you’re considering is compatible with your dirt bike (i.e. Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, etc.).

To get your bike from place to place, you might consider investing in a ramp. Ramps come in steel or aluminum and facilitate loading and unloading your dirt bike. If you think there is a problem with your stock brakes, one or some parts you may need can include: brake pads, rotors, brake lines, pins, or disc covers. You can expect to pay about ($50-100) for clutch kits (with friction and steel plates and springs included) which are usually available for most bike models.

An air filter, which runs at about $20, is one dirt bike part that many bike owners change quite frequently. If everything is moving smoothly, and you just want to enhance the look of your bike, you can add graphics (between $50-70) or graphics and seat cover kits ($100-200). One should definitely not leave out safety as part of the dirt bike experience. Goggles (approx. $15-70) and a helmet (approx. $200-300) are two items that you’ll definitely need.

If you’re unsure about purchasing a used dirt bike because you only want to use it for a weekend vacation, then your best option may be to rent one. Renting a dirt bike for a day can come out to about $100.

Of course, you can get more for your money when you rent for more days. This can also give you an idea of what kind of bike and/or features you’d be looking for if you were to search for a used dirt bike. Some people prefer to buy a used dirt bike simply to save some money. After all, some money’s going to have to go into improving/maintaining your bike and purchasing safety equipment such as: jackets, gloves, helmets, pants, jerseys, and boots.

If you already know a thing or two about dirt bikes, some sites can help you narrow down your search. One site, for example, allows people to auction off their used dirt bikes while providing a description about their vehicle (i.e. recent upgrades, problems, and the bike’s general history).

You can find used dirt bikes from a couple hundred dollars up to a couple thousand dollars. The range is significant which allows people to find their perfect used dirt bike at a price they can afford. Many online locations recommend that you check for the shipping fees. Because these bikes are sold by different sellers, shipping fees may vary.
